Dog care in Edinburgh

Edinburgh might be the best capital city in Europe for dog walking. Holyrood Park (650 acres with Arthur's Seat, Salisbury Crags, and three lochs) sits in the heart of the city, all off-lead apart from a few seasonal restrictions. The Water of Leith Walkway runs 12 miles from Balerno through the centre out to Leith and is daily fare for a thousand local dogs. The Meadows, Bruntsfield Links, Inverleith Park, the Botanics (lead only), Cramond Beach and foreshore, Portobello Beach, Blackford Hill, the Pentlands Regional Park running off the south-west of the city - the list is long and the quality is high. Calton Hill and the Royal Mile see plenty of urban dog walking too.

New Town and Stockbridge owners (tenement flats, no garden) lean on daycare and walkers. The southside (Marchmont, Bruntsfield, Morningside) is walker and groomer territory. Family suburbs like Corstorphine, Murrayfield, Liberton, and Trinity carry steady demand across all services. Boarding fills early for the Edinburgh Festival period and the school holidays - Scottish term dates differ from England's, so demand patterns are slightly offset.

Scotland operates under the Animal Welfare and Licensing (Scotland) Regulations 2021, the Scottish equivalent of England's 2018 regime. The City of Edinburgh Council publishes its licensed boarders, daycares, and walkers register through environmental health. Holyrood Park is managed by Historic Environment Scotland, not the council, and has specific rules around the lochs during nesting season and near grazing sheep. The Pentlands has working farmland, so dogs on leads near livestock is the standard expectation.
